Emploi : Il sert souvent à la description d'une action qui est en cours de déroulement dans le passé souvent interrompue par une autre action, un autre événement.
Formation : to be (au prétérit) + verbe en ING
exemple : I was sleeping when the phone rang. Je dormais lorsque le téléphone sonna.
A la forme interrogative, il suffit d'inverser le sujet et l'auxiliaire "be" :
Were you sleeping when the phone rang ?
A la forme négative, il faut mettre l'auxiliaire "be" sous sa forme négative :
I wasn't sleeping when the phone rang.
